Summer is drawing near and so are all the summer pests and insects. Ticks, one of the most common problem insects for our canine friends, are usually found in heavily wooded areas and deep grass. Ticks attach to our dog’s skin and feed on their blood. While the act of feeding on the blood is not dangerous to our pets, the initial bite can be. These ticks can carry Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, anaplasmosis, and tularemia, or more than one of these with the same bite. If untreated these diseases can cause major health problems and occasionally even death.
Protecting you pet from these dangerous insects is as simple as applying the proper tick preventative on a regular schedule. Simple to administer, it's only needed once each month. A highly effective collar is also available for dogs. Check with your Hobart Animal Clinic veterinarian for specific recommendations based on your pet's individual needs, and see if he or she recommends the Lyme disease vaccine as well.
